About the logblog

This year K International will start a five year tree planting project to plant 50,000 trees. This weblog (the logblog) has been designed to keep everyone up to date with the latest developments.

The Project

The site chosen for the woodland is in the north east of England (about 20 miles south west of Newcastle). The project will involve developing a brownfield site that was once a disused coal mine in the North East of England into a place of natural beauty.

After the planting is complete the new woodland will be maintained and monitored by K International to make sure that the trees reach maturity, taking between 50 and 150 years depending on the species.

So far in 2008

Our hope this year is to plant 8,000 trees. The vast majority of these will be planted mechanically directly into the soil. So far we have planted about 50, 20 directly on site (as an experiment) and 30 were potted and given away.

Which species will be planted?

The trees planted will be a mixture of Scots Pine, Spruce, Oak and Beech. These varieties have been chosen as they grow particular well on the site chosen.

The Scots Pine and the Spruce will be planted first and used as a nurse crop for the slower growing Oak and Beech which will be dispersed around the woodland at a later date.

This mixture will eventually form a traditional British Woodland providing a rich habitat for some of Britain’s rare birds, insects, squirrels, bats, foxes, badgers and deer. As the woodland becomes established it will also provide a home for many other species of flora and fauna indigenous to the local area.

The Environmental Benefits

Research from the Trust for Public Land, Sacramento, California says that a single mature tree will absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 21.8kgs/year and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings.

Other pollutants are also removed from the atmosphere by trees. These include; sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide. Research suggests that these vary given the environment surrounding the woodland.

We will post regular articles about the environment and easy ways that you can reduce your or your company’s impact on the environment.
